At a press conference, the director general of the WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, took stock of the situation on avian influenza, recalling that the virus has also been found in raw milk in the United States. The warning, for all countries, is therefore to consume exclusively pasteurized milk

The topic of avian influenza remains in the spotlight after the virus was also discovered in raw milk in the United States. The World Health Organization’s (WHO) Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, addressed the issue during a regular press conference focused on the most urgent global health topics.
U.S. dairy sector on alert
Avian influenza is causing concern in the U.S. dairy sector, not only for the health of dairy cattle but also for consumer health. With 36 infected farms across 9 states and one human case reported, the need for vigilance has become a priority.
Human infections under control
The situation with human infections is absolutely under control, the WHO reports, with 220 people monitored and 30 tested, but constant monitoring remains crucial, especially for those who have been exposed to infected animals.
Raw milk found to contain the virus
An additional concern has been the discovery of the virus in raw milk. However, preliminary tests have shown that pasteurization is effective in destroying the virus.
WHO’s advice is clear: consume only pasteurized milk
The WHO’s advice is clear, as stated by Ghebreyesus:
“The standing advice of WHO in all countries is that people should consume pasteurized milk.”
This global message aims to ensure food safety and mitigate the risk of the virus spreading through the consumption of contaminated milk.
Importance of increased surveillance
Although H5N1 has not yet shown signs of efficient human-to-human transmission, it is essential to increase surveillance to prevent its possible evolution, which would represent a greater danger to public health.
U.S. epidemic highlights need for holistic health approach
The epidemic in the United States highlights the importance of a holistic approach to health, known as One Health, which recognizes the interconnection between human, animal, and environmental health. Additionally, it underscores the need for strong international collaboration and global monitoring systems to address new pandemic threats.
