Wild Thang: the unexpected winner of 2024’s World’s Ugliest Dog Contest

Don't judge based on appearances: this Pekingese won an American competition for its uniqueness (and uncommon beauty). The competition precisely intends to promote the imperfections and traits of each animal because there are no "ugly" animals

In a surprise turn of events, Wild Thang, an 8-year-old brachycephalic Pekingese, clinched victory at this year’s highly anticipated competition in Petaluma. Despite initial perceptions of “ugliness,” judges at Petaluma had no doubts when casting their votes.

The World’s Ugliest Dog Contest, contrary to its name, does not mock its participants but rather celebrates their unique appearances, challenging conventional standards of beauty. It aims to highlight the individuality and imperfections that make each animal special—a mission for which Wild Thang proved to be perfectly suited.

The event, held annually in Petaluma, California, draws dog owners, animal lovers, and the curious from across the country and beyond. Amidst outdoor booths and stages, organizers and associations raise awareness about adoption, showcasing dogs eagerly awaiting their forever homes.

Each competitor has a touching backstory, often intertwined with their physical appearance. They parade at Petaluma, demonstrating to the world that true beauty transcends outward appearances.

Wild Thang, despite his challenges including a permanently extended tongue, malformed teeth, and a wobbly leg, exemplifies resilience. He overcame distemper as a puppy, a testament to his strength and spirit.

Moreover, Wild Thang leverages his social media presence to support fellow Pekingese dogs in Ukraine, facilitating adoptions away from the conflict. Through his Instagram account, he has successfully aided in the adoption of 7 Pekingese into loving homes in Canada and the United States.

In addition to Wild Thang’s triumph, Rome, a 14-year-old Pug battling severe social anxiety, and Daisy Mae, also 14 years old and rescued from the streets at the age of 2, secured well-deserved second and third places, respectively.

The 2024 World’s Ugliest Dog Contest not only crowned a deserving winner but also spotlighted the resilience and beauty found in every dog, regardless of their physical appearance.
