Champion equestrian Charlotte Dujardin suspended from 2024 Paris Olympics for alleged whipping incident

Suspension for British champion Charlotte Dujardin. He will not compete in the Olympics over a shocking video of him repeatedly whipping a horse. An investigation has been launched, the equestrian discipline bodies are ready to deal with the case of the athlete's inappropriate conduct

At 39 years old, world-renowned British equestrian Charlotte Dujardin will not be competing in the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics. The decorated rider has been provisionally suspended for six months by the International Federation for Equestrian Sports (FEI) due to allegations of repeated and shocking use of a whip.

The equestrian community is in turmoil. Following the controversy involving Kim Raisner, who was disqualified for hitting a horse that refused to jump, Dujardin’s case has once again highlighted concerns about animal welfare in the sport.

The incident

The incident came to light through an old video showing Dujardin’s inappropriate behavior, deemed inconsistent with animal welfare principles. The video was anonymously submitted to the FEI and quickly spread across news outlets and social media.

In the footage, Dujardin is seen whipping a horse multiple times during a training session. While the use of whips is prohibited in international dressage competitions, it is allowed in training. However, the FEI determined that Dujardin’s actions were excessive.

Public reaction and Dujardin’s apology

The video has sparked widespread outrage. In response to the backlash, Dujardin issued a statement on her Instagram account:

“What happened is completely out of character and does not reflect how I train my horses or my students. However, there are no excuses. I am deeply ashamed and should have set a better example at that moment.”

The British animal welfare organization, RSPCA, has expressed its concern, condemning the incident. A spokesperson stated that the RSPCA is prepared to assist with investigations, emphasizing that any actions causing pain to animals are unacceptable and that steps must be taken to prevent such occurrences.

The British Equestrian Federation has also weighed in, underscoring the importance of maintaining high standards of horse welfare.

“As custodians of equestrian sport, we must uphold the highest standards of equine welfare: the horse’s well-being is paramount. We have been in close contact with the FEI regarding this matter and will fully comply with any investigation requests. The allegations are serious and have far-reaching consequences, but maintaining the integrity of our sport remains our priority. We will continue to work with the FEI and Charlotte to complete the process,” stated Executive Director Jim Eyre in a press release.

Upholding animal welfare in equestrian sports

There are no compromises when it comes to animal welfare, in any situation or competition. This incident may mark the end of Dujardin’s career, or it may reveal the lengths to which some are willing to go to win titles and medals.
