Canelo: the dog who waited 12 years for his owner

A true story of a dog's great love, devotion and loyalty towards his owner becomes a moving short film, to say the least. For 12 years he waited for him outside the local hospital, from which the man never left

We are all familiar with Hachiko, an Akita dog that waited almost a decade for his owner’s return at Shibuya Station in Tokyo. In fact, the world is full of Hachikos, and now a short film pays homage to another companion-a very well-known one in Spain.

The film is from Animagic Studios and represents the tragic story about the bond of a dog and his human friend. This short film is based on a true event which happened at the end of the 1980s, when the dog’s name was Canelo.

Canelo was a dog from Cádiz, Spain. He would follow his owner to the hospital continuously and waited at the door while his owner, who begged for a living, made regular visits to the dialysis unit. He watched his owner disappear through the door of the hospital, then waited in the very spot they shared their goodbyes.

But one day, he never walks out of those doors. Canelo, remaining in ignorant bliss of the tragedy, continued to visit the hospital each day, the same hospital, for 12 years, probably just hoping to see that face again with whom he had spent so much of his life.

If it weren’t because of the sad fact that he was hit by a car and died, he most probably had waited even longer. People from Cádiz were so moved by his story that they decided to put up a commemorative plaque in his memory.

This memory inspired the short film that salutes the loyalty and love that dogs have for those that they care about.

Although the plot of the story has been changed in some aspects, those who know it are very pleased to see it represented in this international production. Thanks to the film, this story of devotion transcended Andalusian frontiers.

The film brought to screens worldwide this endless friendship and is making people conscious with respect to respect for animals. The result is nothing short of moving.
