Is l’Oréal’s Hydra Hyaluronic shampoo causing hair loss?

Several videos on TikTok and reports from consumers from different parts of the world accuse L'Oréal's Elvive Hydra Hyaluronic shampoo of causing hair loss. And there is a country that has launched an investigation to clarify the situation

Recently, the web has buzzed about people allegedly suffering from excessive hair shedding due to using a very popular L’Oréal Paris shampoo. The product in question is the Elvive Hydra Hyaluronic-easily recognized because of the purple packaging.

Scores of videos, which started in Spanish and now see Italian TikTokers participating, show strands forming blockades in sinks, clinging to brushes, and even falling out in tufts. The users blame all this alarming hair loss on the long use of the L’Oréal shampoo.

But how true are these accusations?

How true are the accusations?

Although the videos went viral in no time, such accusations have to be taken “with a grain of salt”. Social media itself incentivizes sensationalism: some individuals will embellish their claims in their desire for more views and followers as one takes advantage of the viral moment and fuels an overstated reaction.

Further, many commenters have indicated that seasonal shedding falls between September and November. This is within the realm of normalcy since it is expected to lose up to 100-150 hairs daily during this period.

It is also worth noting that sometimes there are other causes related to hair loss, apart from genetics, vitamin deficiencies, or mineral deficiencies; environmental pollution and exposure to toxic substances can also play a big role in this, including stress, anxiety, trauma to one’s system, or any combination of the same.

Of course, there are very harsh cosmetic products that hit the health of one’s hair, like a certain shampoo, conditioner, or hair dye. However, as far as the L’Oréal shampoo is concerned, further explanation is required. It had come under recent scrutiny because some consumer protection agency had started an investigation in order to see if these claims hold merit.

Investigation launched against L’Oréal shampoo

After social media reports and consumer complaint sites, SERNAC (National Consumer Service of Chile) has opened an investigation into the possible side effects from the Elvive Hydra Hyaluronic line. Complaints filed by consumers range from irritation, changes in the texture of hair, to abnormal hair loss.

SERNAC has requested detailed information about the complaints that have been received and the responses given to the consumers who have been affected. The agency has requested a report from laboratory tests on quality, composition, and safety of the involved product.

Once provided with evidence showing products are defective or pose health risks, SERNAC may require the withdrawal of the product line in circulation, as well as other actions on the part of L’Oréal, as carried out in previous similar situations.

Only time will reveal whether this issue comes up with tangible evidence.

What to do if you notice adverse effects?

Though there is no conclusive proof that may link Elvive Hydra Hyaluronic with hair loss, for now, it would be prudent to be watchful of any changes on your scalp or in the condition of your hair, in case you use this product.

If you develop unusual symptoms of irritation or abnormal hair loss, you may need to stop the shampoo and consult a dermatologist. Equally important is ensuring that any issues are addressed directly to the company for further assistance.
