Should you stop using uv nail dryers? New findings on potential health risks

UV lamps used for gel nail manicures emit UV radiation that can damage cells and increase the risk of tumors.

Well, if you use UV nail dryers-once the norm for gel manicures-think again. A new study has cast serious doubt over the health safety of these gadgets, which emit UV radiation that can cause cellular damage to human cells and may even lead to genetic mutations associated with cancer risk.

UV exposure and cell damage: findings from the University of California, San Diego

A team of researchers at the University of California, San Diego, exposed human and mouse cells to UV radiation from such nail dryers in the lab. These devices work by emitting UV light wavelengths between 340 and 395 nm that help cure the gel polish for more durability and glossiness that can last up to two weeks. However, long exposure to such radiation may lead to serious health hazards.

They reported that a single 20-minute exposure produced a cell death rate of 20-30%, whereas three successive exposures increased the rates up to between 65 and 70%.

Protecting yourself from UV radiation

Apart from cell death, DNA damage and genetic mutations were demonstrated on the cells under UV light exposure. Previous studies have identified these kinds of mutations to be linked with skin cancer. While this study was performed in the laboratory, it does show that UV nail dryers have similar risks as tanning beds, which are also linked to skin cancer.

But scientists, despite such unsettling data, did indicate that more human-based studies are needed for them to understand the long-term effects of UV radiation coming from these devices. Meanwhile, dermatologists call for caution in the use of UV dryers.

Most experts recommend applying broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen to one’s hands prior to the nail dryer or, even better still, wear protective gloves showing off one’s nails.

Extra health risks with regular uv nail dryer use

Apart from the risk of cancer, frequent usage of UV nail dryers could also lead to brittle nails, as well as allergic reactions for people whose skins are sensitive. As a matter of fact, though gel manicures offer a durable and beautiful finish, it is important to be more aware of the potential health risks and to consider adopting precautionary measures that enable one to minimize exposure to UV radiation. Sometimes, lurking behind those minute decisions may be a major health hazard.
