Celebrating diversity: Mattel launches the first Diwali Barbie

As the Hindu festival of lights, Diwali, approaches, Mattel has launched its first "Diwali Barbie" with typical costumes and full of cultural symbols

Mattel has released its very first “Diwali Barbie“, a doll to celebrate Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, which begins on October 31 this year. In partnership with Indian designer Anita Dongre, the latest Barbie dons traditional touches that celebrate the rich cultural heritage of India.

Traditional elements celebrating Indian culture

It is attired with a choli, or short top, with a floral vest known as a koti, with a very fancy, floor-length lehenga, or skirt. These are the traditional costumes, each part of which is replicated in cultural signs: flowers on the lehenga, for example, including dahlias, jessamine, and the Indian lotus, show strength and beauty.

We want to take India’s rich heritage to the global platform,” said Lalit Agarwal, country manager for Mattel India. The doll is just a way to pass it on in celebrating the richness of culture with the price of $40 at major retailers.

Global communities appreciate Indian culture

Designer Anita Dongre said the Diwali Barbie celebrates a love for Indian culture worldwide. Her accessories include gold earrings and bracelets that reflect the lights of the festival, signifying the light and joy of Diwali.

A Symbol of change and inclusion

Barbie has long been censured over a period of more than 60 years for the limited representation of beauty and gender. That has changed in recent years when it has made major strides toward inclusion. Today, Barbie dolls are available in 35 skin tones, with various hairstyles, body shapes, and abilities, including dolls who are blind or who have Downs.

The Diwali Barbie, thus, becomes an icon of change and acceptance in a manner that rejoices in the fact that every culture has a story to be told and beauty to be embraced. This doll is one unique way of honoring one of the most meaningful festivals in India, Diwali, while encouraging younger generations to understand and embrace cultural diversity.
