The world's largest vertical bifacial solar power installation has been built at Ullevaal Stadium in Oslo, Norway. With a capacity of 248.4 kWp, this innovative project includes 1,242 vertical solar units, generating 219,000 kWh of clean energy annually.

But the world’s largest vertical bifacial solar power installation has been built in Norway – not on farmland or any abandoned site, for that matter. It is situated in a football stadium.
The giant 248.4 kWp installation has been built at Oslo’s Ullevaal Stadium, the country’s national arena for football. Now, it is officially recognized as the largest vertical bifacial solar installation globally.
Vertical bifacial solar panels: the latest growing trend
Recently, vertical bifacial photovoltaic technologies have come to the fore in terms of their efficiency and space-saving design. Among the most suggestive uses of this technology is that applied in the vineyards of Sicily, where these panels both produce energy and protect the grapevines from the hot sun during summer.
However, the Norwegian installation is the world’s most extended vertical bifacial solar project installed on a rooftop to this date. The Norwegian installation completed recently in record time on a bitumen-covered surface has set a new global standard for bifacial projects. The system was designed by Over Easy Solar in cooperation with Solenergi FUSen-two Norwegian firms that specialize in photovoltaic projects.
Advanced technology for higher energy yield
Vertical photo-voltaic units of 1,242 with an individual capacity of 200 Wp were intelligently designed to offer maximum exposure to the sun. It is capable of producing 219,000 kWh of clean energy annually with very significant carbon emissions reductions.
The vertical PV panels installed at Ullevaal Stadium have demonstrated 20-30% higher specific output compared to traditional flat-roof photovoltaic systems. Their south-north orientation-20 degrees east of south-enables them to get the most energy out of every month of the year, with maximum efficiency in the winter. More importantly, the vertical design facilitates easier sliding off of snow, hence reducing its coverage, while the albedo effect (light reflected by white snow) boosts energy production during winter. These panels are also very lightweight, which facilitates installation, inspection, and repair to a great extent.
