Dirty Coffee is a drink that combines hot espresso and cold milk, very popular among Generation Z kids. Let's discover its characteristics and how it is prepared

This fashionable drink has already swept across Asia, but now it is becoming famous all over the world, specifically to target Generation Z.

There is an appealing contrast in textures, temperatures, and colors created by the hot espresso and cold milk.

Dirty Coffee is a curious creation that comprises hot espresso and cold milk combined in striking contrast from the texture, temperature, and color perspective. Let’s take a closer look at how it’s made.

What is Dirty Coffee?

Dirty Coffee: basically, a hot shot of espresso laid on cold milk, but most importantly, without stirring the two ingredients together. This makes for a drink with layers, where coffee “dirties” the milk-hence the name of the beverage.

While it sounds so simple, making perfect Dirty Coffee is all in the details. The milk has to be ice-cold, and the espresso must be added gently so as not to break the separation; hence, the beauty of this drink is an added pleasure.

The origins of Dirty Coffee are a little debated, but the majority credit Katsuyuki Tanaka, founder of Bear Pond Espresso in Tokyo, with the invention in 2010. According to Tanaka, his inspiration came when one customer complained that ice in her iced latte had melted and spoiled the drink. From this, Tanaka came up with pouring hot espresso directly onto cold milk without adding ice to preserve the texture.

As mentioned, Dirty Coffee was more for Generation Z because it is pretty much an eye candy, and well, it tastes good. When cold milk is poured into the strong coffee, the effect of layering can be a real stunner, which, in turn, makes it really perfect for social media. So, if you want to try it out, here’s how you can do it.

How to make Dirty Coffee

Dirty Coffee is relatively easy to make, but the quality of the drink will depend on paying attention to some specifics in its preparation:

  • Ice-cold milk: should be prepared by filling a clear glass with about 3 to 3.5 oz (80-90 ml) of whole milk and placing it in the freezer for as long as 15 minutes. The temperature of the milk should be really low to create this thermal contrast with the espresso.
  • Ristretto espresso: Pull a ristretto espresso in a 1:1 coffee-to-water ratio, using about 0.63 ounces (18 grams) of ground coffee; yield 0.63 ounces (18 ml) of espresso for about 20 seconds in total flow.
  • Pour with care: When the espresso is ready, pour cold milk over gradually and gently. The espresso will sit on top of the milk, working its way down slowly to create an attractive layered effect.
  • And don’t stir: For the perfect Dirty Coffee, all that is required is to restrain oneself from stirring the drink.

“The dirty coffee is made by pulling espresso over extremely chilled milk. The espresso will sit on top of the milk and will slowly trickle down. The hot and cold layers make this drink a delight.”. Recipe: Pour milk 80 to 90 ml into a glass and leave it in the freezer for up to fifteen minutes. Pull the ristretto over milk, meaning it is 1:1 ratio of espresso; 18 grams of coffee resulting in 18 ml of espresso in about 20 seconds. Since in dirty coffee, the espresso needs to be more concentrated. Serve and enjoy the drink by sipping without mixing..

There is nothing in the rulebook that prevents one from making a vegan version of Dirty Coffee using plant-based milk.
