The rare panda dolphin: a symbol of Patagonia’s biodiversity

Commerson's dolphins or "panda dolphins" are a symbol of Patagonia but are threatened by the loss of their habitat: Luis Burgueño was lucky enough to meet one

In the icy waters of Patagonia, specifically at Puerto de Rawson in the province of Chubut, another diving experience was the beginning of a once-in-a-lifetime experience for naturalist documentarian Luis Burgueño. He saw one of the most amazing and rare species on Earth, the Commerson’s dolphin, also called the “panda dolphin” due to its striking black-and-white coat similar to those of small pandas.

This viral video of an encounter, where it swims around an inflatable boat as if to be filmed, has made its way onto social media. The dolphin is a symbol of the unique biodiversity in Patagonia but inhabits coastal habitats threatened on various fronts.

The curious and agile Commerson’s dolphin

This species, reaching only about 4.9 feet and weighing up to 110 pounds, is known for its curiosity and agility. It is often spotted “surfing” the waves near the shore or following boat trails. Despite its small size, the Commerson’s dolphin is extremely agile and curious, often approaching boats to observe visitors, just as it did with Burgueño’s boat.

Conservation programs and protected areas

It mostly occurs along the coast of Valdés Peninsula and waters around Tierra del Fuego, being a very sociable species. Commerson’s dolphins often occur in small groups, although large aggregations can be seen, especially during seasonal migrations.

Unfortunately, despite its charm, the Commerson’s dolphin faces numerous threats. In fact, the main worry for its survival is the loss of habitat due to increasing urbanization and marine pollution. The use of fishing nets and industrial activities further contribute to the decline of the population, already so vulnerable. In other areas, accidental fishing of these dolphins is one of the main causes for their mortality.

For its protection, conservation programs and protected areas have been set up along the Patagonian coast. However, conservation of the Commerson’s dolphin requires an ongoing effort in marine ecosystem conservation and reduction of invasive activities that threaten its survival.

A symbol of Patagonia’s endangered biodiversity

Sadly, the Commerson’s dolphin is not the only species facing the risk of extinction in the region. Loss of natural habitat is one of the most severe threats, alongside commercial fishing, which negatively impacts its population.

These incredible cetaceans are hosted in the crystal-clear waters of Patagonia, which are under increasing pressure. This great marine animal stands as a symbol of the natural wonders of this remote corner of the world, which must be protected.
