Sir Elton John, one of the most cherished icons of international music, made a shocking revelation regarding his health challenges during the past months. During the gala evening at London’s Dominion Theatre for the premiere of the musical “The Devil Wears Prada“, to which he wrote the music, Elton shared that he has completely lost his sight. From the stage, he declared:
“As some of you may know, I’ve had some problems, and now I’ve lost my sight. So it’s hard for me to see it. But I love hearing it, and tonight it sounded good.”
Despite the gravity of his condition, he added with his characteristic optimism: “I couldn’t watch the show, but I enjoyed myself“. Elton also took advantage of the opportunity to thank his husband, David Furnish, calling him “his rock”.
This rockstar has been suffering from different health issues for years and earlier revealed that he had been infected with a serious eye infection while staying in France during summer. He wrote on his Instagram page to update his fans:
“Over the summer, I dealt with a serious eye infection that left me, unfortunately, with limited vision in one eye. I’m healing, but it’s an extremely slow process, and it will take time before the vision in the affected eye returns.”
But it appears the healing process has gone from bad to worse. Currently, John has lost his vision in one eye, and the other eye is also badly damaged. This is seriously hampering his music career. In an interview last month, he revealed that he can no longer read lyrics or sheet music and is uncertain about returning to the studio anytime soon:
“I haven’t seen out of my right eye for four months, and my left eye isn’t doing great. There’s hope that things will improve, but for now, I’m a bit stuck. I can do things like this”-referring to the interview-“but going into the studio to record… I’m not sure.”
The luckiest man in the world
Despite these setbacks, Elton John remains remarkably optimistic. Although his condition has slowed the progress of his new album—featuring songs co-written with longtime lyricist Bernie Taupin—he maintains a positive outlook. In his own words, he feels like “the luckiest man in the world” and takes pride in his resilience:
“I’m proud of the attitude I’ve taken toward myself and everything that’s happening.”
A message of hope amid adversity
Elton John may have finished his farewell tour of the UK last year with that epic concert in front of 120,000 fans at Glastonbury, but he just refuses to be defeated by his health challenges. His struggles have kept him inspiring fans with a powerful message of hope and faith in the future despite the difficulties he faces.
