Apple will transform the way people interact in different languages using a new feature that Apple will introduce in AirPods when iOS 19 comes out. The innovation will enable the real-time translation of conversation, and Apple’s earbuds will become even more practical and handy in everyday use.
How the system works
The system is easy to operate and is user-friendly: iPhone-paired AirPods will receive the sound of the conversation through their microphones. The phone will then handle the live translation and transmit the translated version directly into the user’s earbuds or play it through the smartphone speakers so that the other person will hear it as well. Additionally, the full transcription of the conversation will be visible on the phone’s display, which will make it easier for people communicating in various languages.
When will the new feature be available?
Although this technology has not been entirely new—Google has had essentially the same on Pixel Buds since 2017—Apple is expecting an improved experience through reduced latency and more precise translation. The hardware of the AirPods should be strong and seamless integration in iOS should grant the best of performance, and no lag or confusion in sensing the language.
Another fascinating aspect is the potential compatibility with older generations of AirPods. It remains to be seen whether the feature will be exclusive to the current generation of earbuds or whether it will be available on earlier versions through software updates. Compatibility with different iPhone models is also unclear, but Apple may choose to include support for a huge number of devices to cater to as many people as possible.
The introduction of iOS 19 with this feature is expected to be officially announced at the WWDC 2025 conference and released before the end of the year. Apple also has under development a set of upgrades to its operating systems with the objective of simplifying the user interface and introducing new innovative technologies.
