Dogs catching treats: the photographer who turned snack time into art

The photographer who took them was German Christian Vieler, who has specialized in this type of portrait since 2013, creating a photographic series entitled "Dogs Catching Treats"

Christian Vieler, a German photographer and devoted dog lover, has a unique talent: he captures dogs at the exact moment they leap for treats in mid-air—a split second that reveals a world of personality, emotion, and canine charm.

Since 2013, Vieler has dedicated himself to this playful and surprisingly expressive niche. What began as a few fun shots of his own Labrador Retriever jumping excitedly for snacks soon evolved into a full-fledged series he calls “Dogs Catching Treats.”

The concept may sound simple, but the results are anything but. Each photo tells a different story, showing dogs in a flurry of emotion—joy, confusion, disappointment, and triumph—all in the blink of an eye.

Mastering this kind of photography is no easy task. Timing the shot perfectly to capture a fast-moving treat and a reactive dog requires incredible skill and patience. After years of practice, Vieler has become a true master of this fleeting moment.

The project has gained so much popularity that he decided to publish a book of his work, aptly titled “Treat!”—a collection of thousands of hilarious, tender, and unexpected portraits of dogs caught in the act.

After photographing dogs of every shape, size, and breed, Vieler says the real secret isn’t just in the camera work.

“It’s a mix of empathy and real love for animals,” he revealed. That connection allows him to anticipate their movements, read their expressions, and capture moments that feel almost human in their depth.

Looking at these images, it’s impossible not to smile—or to be impressed. Each dog wears a different expression, reflecting its unique personality. It’s a reminder of how much emotion our furry friends can show, even in the simplest moments.

So hats off to Christian Vieler—and to the patient, treat-loving dogs who made it all possible.
