A feline masterpiece: Amsterdam’s kattenkabinet

Here is the Kattenkabinet in Amsterdam, a special museum dedicated to cats in art, including works by Picasso and Rembrandt and close encounters with the resident felines.

There exists a museum in Amsterdam that is far removed from the beautiful canals and tulip exhibitions; here, the true stars are not painters or sculptors but our beloved feline companions. The Kattenkabinet, founded in 1990 by Bob Meijer, is a one-of-a-kind institution entirely devoted to cats in art. The idea has been attributed to the beloved cat of the founder, known as J.P. Morgan, in honor of one of the most illustrious bankers.

Once you step inside, visitors are set in a world where paintings, drawings, and sculptures have celebrated cats for centuries. The collection has pieces by the likes of Picasso and Rembrandt, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Théophile Steinlen, Corneille, Sal Meijer, Théophile Steinlen, and Jože Ciuha, who have all been fascinated with the beauty and enigma of these wonderful creatures.

But here’s the twist: five feline curators named Siri, Oscar, Billy, Villem, and Nala now roam the museum’s halls. Whether indulging in a cuddle or giving you a judgmental and far-knowledgeable stare, these felines make the visit equally artistic and unpredictable.

The museum opens Tuesday through Sunday from 12:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M., and tickets are available for online purchase and at the entrance. It is a must on your Amsterdam agenda, either for die-hard cat lovers or those in search of an unusual experience.
