Cassius, world’s largest crocodile, passes away at 120

The largest crocodile in the world is gone. Cassius, a record-breaking saltwater reptile, has died in an Australian zoo. The staff of the facility spread the news, remembering the specimen who was talked about for a long time

Cassius was a behemoth saltwater crocodile who drew in thousands of tourists from around the world, taken aback by his gigantic size. He had gained recognition from Guinness World Records for his huge size in 2011, and Cassius died in his enclosure at Marineland Melanesia Crocodile Habitat on Australia‘s Green Island after several decades in captivity.

A legendary beloved says goodbye

News of his death came from the Marineland Melanesia Crocodile Habitat, where Cassius had lived for a long time. “He wasn’t just a crocodile; he was a family member“, the staff said. To them, Cassius was truly an icon of the park and a “dear companion” to George, its founder, for 37 continuous years.

A record-breaking predator

Estimates had Cassius at 120 years old, and he measured 18 feet in length-the largest saltwater crocodile to be captured alive in Australia. In 1984, he was captured from his home in the Northern Territory, where he earned quite the reputation for ‘attacking’ boats. He was transported 2,000 miles to Green Island, where he would reside for the rest of his life.

R.I.P. an icon

Starting from October 15 onwards, the health of Cassius had only visibly gone downhill and finally died. “Cassius would always remain in the hearts of all those who ever got an opportunity to meet this beast whose presence was way larger than life,” Marineland explained to the visitors. They extended their “heartfelt thanks for those who came to see the world’s largest crocodile now free into the only hands stronger than his-Death“.
