Fires devastate Brazil, but a tiny survivor emerges

A little monkey was saved from the fires that continue to bring Brazil to its knees. The primate is now safe, but his home almost no longer exists due to the fires

Wildfires are sweeping across Brazil, leaving death and destruction in their wake throughout whole natural ecosystems. However, amidst the ash, a fire crew found a small, helpless life and rescued it.

A group of firefighters from Araguari’s 2nd Military Company rescued a tiny monkey from a tragic fate, in the state of Minas Gerais. The firefighters fought flames in the Pau Furado Regional Park and later came across the primate after containing the blaze.

It was a marmoset that was disoriented and frightened by the unfolding disaster. Firefighters cradled it in their hands, giving it water and holding it up close to their chests. The scene was heart-melting in its simplicity.

They used a bottle cap to give it a few drops of water since the monkey was so small. They had found the animal on ground still warm from the fires, now surrounded by barren emptiness. Fortunately, it showed no signs of burns.

A second chance for the marmoset

With no habitat, the marmoset would never have had any chance of survival, because it would not have access to either food or safe shelter. The primate, saved literally from death, was transported to the veterinary hospital of the Federal University of Uberlândia, where it will remain for as long as necessary while undergoing rehabilitation.

This little monkey probably symbolizes a Brazil wrought by fire. It has been so bad in the country due to unfavorable weather conditions and scant rainfall. The voracious fire tore through the Pantanal biodiversity hot spot, utterly affecting the hyacinth macaws’ sanctuary.

The consequences of this terrible emergency are obvious to everyone; this small surviving primate stands as a poignant reminder. Firefighters keep their unrelenting work going, while a field veterinary hospital has been set up at Tenda dos Morenos to provide first aid to the wildlife affected by the flames.

Fires have reportedly burned through several protected areas, but it is not yet known exactly how many acres of vegetation have been lost, let alone how many animals perished in the inferno. One thing is for sure: this little monkey lives, though its home does not exist anymore.
