Who hasn’t experienced this? While trying to work, perhaps remotely from home, your cat decides to lie down comfortably on your computer keyboard. This seemingly odd behavior, which often brings a smile, actually has several explanations rooted in the natural characteristics of cats and their relationship with their human companions.
Cats Are curious by nature
First and foremost, cats are naturally curious animals, always attentive to what we are doing. If we spend a lot of time on the computer, the cat may want to share that moment with us. Seeing us focused on something, they might think it’s interesting and want to be part of it. They don’t do this out of spite but to better understand our routine and possibly to be closer to us.
The appeal of warmth
Another primary reason why cats lie on keyboards is the warmth generated by the computer. After prolonged use, electronic devices tend to heat up, providing a warm and cozy surface—perfect for a cat nap. Additionally, the slight vibrations produced by a running computer can be soothing for cats, reminiscent of the gentle vibrations of purring.
A way to attract attention
Let’s not forget that keyboards carry our scent, as they are constantly touched by our hands. Cats, with their highly developed sense of smell, are attracted to familiar odors that represent safety and comfort. Lying on the keyboard allows the cat to feel closer to us, especially when we are busy working.
Moreover, cats are territorial animals and like to mark what they consider part of their space. Lying on the keyboard is a way of leaving their scent and asserting their ownership over you and your workspace. This behavior is particularly common if you use a laptop outside of your home, as the cat wants to remind both itself and you that this is its territory.
A clear call for attention
Lying on the keyboard is, of course, also a way to get attention. Cats know that interfering with the computer will catch our eye and perhaps earn them a stroke or two. It’s their way of saying they are there and want to interact with us, despite our busy schedules.
How to manage this behavior
Clearly, this behavior can be disruptive, especially if you’re in a hurry or deeply engaged in work. If you want to prevent your cat from lying on the keyboard, you can create a comfortable alternative area. A heated blanket or a cardboard box near your workstation could become your cat’s new favorite spot, allowing you to work uninterrupted.
