From flip-flops to art: ocean sole’s mission to clean beaches and empower communities

From elephants to turtles, from dragons to cars, the works of art created by this non-profit using simple flip-flops are shockingly beautiful. What's more, 100% green!

Elephants, lions, antelopes, and multicolored turtles—these are just a few of the incredible sculptures that Ocean Sole, a Kenyan charity, creates from used flip-flops. Collected from beaches nationwide, these worn-out sandals are given a new life in a process that provides employment for women, fishermen, and local artisans.

The primary objective of the project is to create environmental awareness and promote ocean protection. What would otherwise be toxic trash is turned into something meaningful and creative.

How it all began

The business was founded by Julia Church, who was inspired by Kenyan children playing with homemade toys created from used flip-flops. Struck by their ingenuity, she decided to involve local mothers in collecting and turning the sandals into small and large handmade works of art.

More than just art

Ocean Sole does not just create sculptures for awareness but also creates custom pieces for private individuals, businesses, and other organizations. Their sculptures have been utilized in botanical gardens, weddings, product launches, shopping malls, and even children’s hospitals.

Apart from their environmental benefit, these pieces of art are admired for their vibrant colors and bold designs.

Each product is unique, made with love, and possible through the people of the local community—who, thanks to this project, have fair wages and safe employment.
