Pope Francis leads the Vatican’s green revolution

The Vatican wants to become increasingly green, as per the precise indication of Pope Francis, determined to follow the indications of the encyclical 'Laudato si'': photovoltaic systems will be installed at the entrances to the Museums and Warehouses, and the construction of systems for the electric charging of State vehicles and its employees

Pope Francis is committed to the principles outlined in his encyclical ‘Laudato si‘,’ striving to make our “common home” increasingly green. In line with this commitment, the Vatican is set to install photovoltaic systems at the entrances of the Museums and Warehouses, and it is also working on creating charging stations for the electric vehicles used by the state and its employees.

Aiming for sustainability

The smallest state in the world is making significant strides towards sustainability, as explained by Salvatore Farina, who was appointed by Pope Francis on February 15 as Director of the Directorate of Infrastructure and Services of the Governorate of Vatican City State.

“The Directorate is particularly active in implementing strategies for energy efficiency and policies related to energy saving, diversifying sources, and adopting low-impact technologies,” Farina explained. “This represents an important ethical, cultural, and technical shift that we strive to achieve through various concrete projects.”

Among these measures is the creation of charging stations for the electric vehicles of the state and its employees (35 stations have already been installed), with a major focus on photovoltaic initiatives.

At the end of June, the installation of an agrivoltaic system to supply electricity to Vatican City State was announced.

Now, photovoltaic systems will be installed at the entrances of the Museums and Warehouses. While the overall impact on the planet might be negligible due to the state’s small size, the message it sends to the world is immensely powerful.
