Michael Jordan opens fourth free medical clinic in his hometown

Michael Jordan has opened his fourth free medical clinic in North Carolina to provide healthcare to people who cannot access adequate care

Basketball legend Michael Jordan has kept on giving back to his community with the opening of his fourth free medical clinic in North Carolina. His new Michael Jordan Family Medical Clinic has opened up in Wilmington, where he was raised. The venture, developed with the assistance of Novant Health, is intended to bring healthcare to those who, due to economics or logistics, lack appropriate medical care available.

The new facility is 7,300 square feet and has 12 patient rooms. The clinic offers primary care services on a weekday basis and is complemented by community health workers that assist patients in accessing local available resources. The program is part of a larger set of initiatives by Jordan to reduce healthcare disparities, particularly in those regions where high costs and lack of transportation are significant barriers to care.

First clinic served close to 1,800 patients in a year

Michael Jordan is particularly interested in this project. With opening his first two clinics in Charlotte in 2019, the popularity of the program was so great that he donated $10 million in 2024 to extend services to Wilmington.

Inside a year, the city’s initial clinic welcomed nearly 1,800 patients, lots of whom had never received basic medical care before. Jordan explained:

This is something that touches me deeply. To see the impact the initial Wilmington clinic has had in under a year has been incredible. Being here again for the opening was an emotional experience, and it just reinforced to me that quality healthcare should be accessible to everybody.

This fourth clinic’s opening is another move toward bridging healthcare disparity. Ernie Bovio, president of Novant Health’s coastal division, was grateful for Jordan’s commitment:

“Thanks to his vision and philanthropy, the clinic that opened a year ago has already treated close to 1,800 patients in nine months. This demonstrates how important these facilities are to the community.”

Jordan’s project is more than a charity; it is a structural reshaping of the local health delivery system. Because of such clinics, many more people are now able to receive basic medical care, regardless of their income or insurance coverage. Through such persistent efforts, Michael Jordan shows that his influence extends far beyond the world of athletics, contributing immensely to the well-being of his community.
