Despite a strong campaign led by Animal Equality and the support of over 60,000 people, the organizers of the Paris 2024 Olympics have decided to continue serving foie gras at the event. This controversial dish, seen as a symbol of animal cruelty, will remain on the menu, drawing criticism from animal rights advocates.
Campaign against foie gras
In recent months, Animal Equality has ramped up its efforts to prevent the inclusion of foie gras in the Olympic menus. The organization brought the issue to public attention through a petition that garnered substantial international support.
Foie gras, considered a delicacy of French cuisine, is produced through a process of force-feeding ducks and geese. This practice has significant ethical and environmental implications, which have been widely discussed and criticized.
Public figures support the cause
The campaign was bolstered by support from prominent figures like environmentalist Chris Packham and Olympic athletes Marcus Daniell and Dotsie Bausch. Despite these efforts, the Paris 2024 Olympic Committee “turned a deaf ear,” according to Animal Equality Italy, and chose to keep foie gras on the menu for VIP guests.
Documenting cruelty
Animal Equality’s campaign was not merely a protest. The organization documented the inhumane conditions animals endure during foie gras production, exposing the physical harm and psychological distress inflicted on these creatures. These efforts significantly raised awareness, encouraging many to reconsider their dietary choices.

Meanwhile, in France, the startup Gourmey has submitted the first application for approval of cultivated foie gras in the European Union. This development marks a significant step in the movement toward ethical and sustainable food alternatives.
