Celebrating global talent at the 2024 urban photo awards

This year too, the winners of the prestigious competition were announced: first of all the Bengali photographer Sanchayan Chowdhury with the image "Eid Journey"

Thousands of photographers from all over the world participate in the prestigious “URBAN Photo Awards” every year, which has reached its 15th edition.

The long-awaited awards ceremony took place in Trieste on Saturday, October 26, at the Auditorium of the Museo Revoltella, where there was the proclamation of the winner of the 2024 “Photographer of the Year”: Sanchayan Chowdhury. The Bengali photographer won first prize with his striking shot entitled “Eid Journey.”

Chowdhury’s winning photo-a hugely packed train in Chittagong, Bangladesh, during a huge religious celebration-impressed the president of the jury, Harry Gruyaert, and shined above all the competitors.

Best rankings in projects and portfolios

In the category “Projects & Portfolios,” the winner was Polish photographer Krzysztof Bednarski with the project “La Vida Lenta.” The “URBAN Book Award” was granted to Italian photographer Maria Pansini, who presented the work “STEEL, SEA AND SORROW.”

According to the official website, this year several new categories and awards have been added: among them, the “URBAN Zine Award” – for projects printed in zine format – the “Artistic Sensitivity Special Award,” and the “Patricia D. Richards Legacy Award” – dedicated to photographers under 35 in the Projects & Portfolios category.

French photographer Marie-Laure Vareilles with “AVATAR’S MOUNTAIN PINTER…”, was the winner of the “Artistic Sensitivity” award while Ekatarina Frolova was the winner of the “Patricia D. Richards Legacy Award”.

The “URBAN Press Award” went to Max Cavallari for his project entitled “Drowned Choice.” Powerful images included in the series captured the scene of a boy riding a bike in the high water after the flooding in Lugo, Emilia-Romagna.
