How to reclaim your time: five apps to help you disconnect

Reducing screen time is key to improving focus and well-being. These five digital detox apps help you disconnect, limit distractions, and reclaim your time. Discover five of the best digital detox apps to help you reclaim your time and break free from smartphone addiction.

Between notifications, emails, and endless scrolling, our smartphones have become an extension of our hands—typically at the expense of our attention and well-being. But on February 22, was the world honors Sconnessi Day, a movement born in Italy that seeks to promote more mindful use of technology. On Sconnessi Day, people are encouraged to turn off their phones and rediscover the physical world.

It may be ironic, but technology can be employed to liberate us from its grasp. There are several apps, each with a somewhat different twist, available that can be employed in order to reduce smartphone usage and “take back” our time. These are five of the best ones:

  • Siempo (Android): It’s a “distraction organizer.” It allows users to create groups of applications that can be muted or temporarily blocked. For example, you can have a “work” group for email, messaging, and social apps and quiet them when you are at work. You can have a “leisure” group with social sites and games and block it at dinner with friends. Siempo also provides total statistics regarding the use of apps so the users can determine their biggest distractions and make more mindful choices.
  • BlackOut (Android): If Siempo’s more subtle approach isn’t doing the trick, BlackOut takes it further. The app blacks out the smartphone screen completely for a user-set period, in effect forcing you to get offline—even if that itch to glance at your phone is overwhelming. The only catch? While in a “blackout,” you won’t be able to answer critical calls.
  • Forest (Android & iOS):Forest gamifies digital detox. The app invites the user to plant a virtual seed that will become a tree if they do not use their phone. If they give in, the tree withers and dies. This is especially effective for younger users. Forest also offers a paid version with more features, including the ability to plant real trees as part of a partnership with an environmental organization.
  • Space (Android & iOS): Space applies social pressure. Individuals choose a period when they want to be away from their phone, and advancement is monitored by a “virtual family”—friends, family members, or colleagues. The accountability reminds the users on their detox journey even when enthusiasm begins to wane. The app also provides personalized suggestions and virtual rewards to encourage individuals to meet targets.
  • Flipd (iOS & Android): Flipd comes in two modes. “Light Lock” is a timer that tracks offline time with one’s own willpower. “Full Lock” truly locks apps for a specified duration of time. Either option, Flipd tracks rich usage data to enable individuals to be aware of what apps they spend most of their time on. The app further has a group feature so friends and family members can participate in a collective digital detox challenge.

These are only a few of the numerous apps that can be used. Whether you decide to “plant trees,” “black out your screen,” or depend on the help of a “virtual family,” the idea is discovering the technique that works best for you. Our time is important—let’s not let smartphones take it from us.
