Kathleen Hennings turns 105 with Guinness and a secret: stay single

Can a Guinness and staying single be the secret to longevity? According to Kathleen Hennings, yes and the numbers prove her right given that she has just turned 105

Kathleen Hennings, who was born in 1919 in Brixton, has just marked the most remarkable milestone-her 105th birthday. She celebrated with a pint of her favorite drink, Guinness, surrounded by friends, staff, and fellow residents at Sandfields Care Home in Cheltenham. The famous Irish brewery gave her a hamper containing themed accessories, chocolates, and cans of her favorite stout as a special gesture.

According to Malaika Charles, manager of the care home, the team went all out to make the day one to remember, hosting a special celebration to mark the occasion.

From London’s busy city life to the quiet beauty of the Cotswolds

Having lived most of her life in London, practicing accountancy, and indulging in rich cultural life, Kathleen was that sort of girl who liked to spend her evenings dancing at Covent Garden-together with opera and ballets-Kathleen would take all that came with the energy of the British capital.

Having faced the intensity of London during wartime, she moved to Cotswold in 1965, where she grew up in the countryside. She moved there with her mother, her brother Charlie, and their dachshund, Rusty, in search of a quieter life.

Quipped Kathleen when asked the secret to her longevity, “Drink Guinness and don’t get married!” With this remark, she elicited laughter and raised eyebrows, adding a bit of mirth and humor to the question. Indeed, some studies have suggested single women are happier and healthier than their married counterparts, even though marriage can be associated with a longer life span-particularly for men.

As for Guinness, it’s known to provide some health benefits in moderation due to its B vitamins and antioxidants. To Kathleen, the stout isn’t just a flavor she loves but actually one of her secrets to a life well-lived and with no regrets.
