Skateboards and sisterhood: how girls are flipping gender roles in Ethiopia

In Ethiopia, a group of girls are challenging stereotypes with the country's first all-female skateboarding group

In Ethiopia, a quiet revolution is rolling forward—on four skateboard wheels. In a country where sports are often considered a male domain, groups of girls are defying cultural norms and turning skateboarding into a symbol of freedom and self-empowerment.

Leading this grassroots movement is Ethiopian Girl Skaters (EGS), the country’s first all-female skateboarding collective. Created to offer a safe space for young women, EGS has become a haven for those eager to embrace the sport and its sense of community. Every Saturday, the skaters gather at Addis Skate Park to train, share experiences, and support each other.

Many of them picked up a board after watching local boys skate, but societal judgment initially held them back. Through sheer determination and a strong sisterhood, they now glide confidently across the ramps, challenging expectations with every trick.

It’s more than a sport—it’s growth, confidence, and purpose

For these young women, skateboarding goes beyond just fun or athleticism. It’s a pathway for personal and collective growth. Within EGS, the skaters not only hone their technical skills but also take part in mentoring sessions and training programs aimed at building self-esteem and resilience.

But the road isn’t smooth. A shortage of gear and a lack of proper facilities are constant challenges, yet they haven’t been enough to stop these trailblazers.

We faced mockery and harassment—but we built our own space

EGS isn’t the only female-led skate group making waves in Ethiopia. Set Skateboarding, founded in 2021 by Helina Solomon, is another force for change. Like many others, Helina faced ridicule and even harassment from boys when she began skating.

Determined to rewrite the rules, she created a space where girls could learn, grow, and skate free from judgment or discrimination. Set Skateboarding has since evolved into a safe and inclusive community that welcomes girls who want to embrace the sport on their own terms.

“we dream of competing internationally—and we’re just getting started”

Despite persistent obstacles, the momentum behind skateboarding in Ethiopia is growing. Olympic athletes and global recognition of these girl-led groups are fueling interest and breaking barriers.

For these skaters, the board is more than just a piece of wood with wheels—it’s a statement of autonomy, a rebellion against traditional gender roles, and a vehicle for expression.

Their dream? More dedicated skate spaces and the chance to one day compete on the international stage. But until then, every descent, every successful trick, and every fall conquered is a win. A win against the stereotypes. A signal that change is already rolling forward.
