Hair claws: a hidden danger in car accidents

The hair claws can pose serious risks in the event of a road accident. During an impact, it can cause injury to the neck or head, especially if it is very stiff

While hair claws are convenient and widely used, they can indeed pose a serious hazard in the context of a car accident. In a collision, large or rigid hair claws become a blunt object that could act as a possible cause of injuries to the head or neck.

As it is explained in a video by @medsri_, a content producer of medical advice on social networks, the violence with which an accident may occur might send the hair claw against the back of the head or neck forcefully, turning traumatic or even leaving abrasions. Of course, it would be worse if the accessory were made of solid plastic or metal, materials that do not deform easily and, thus, make the injury impact greater.

Interference with headrest function

Worse still, it interferes with headrest functionality, which could hardly provide the needed protection at the cervical part during any impact provided it is not well-positioned. The purpose of headrests mainly revolves around preventing whiplash injuries in case of an accident, while when a big accessory such as hair claw displaces the position of the head, it exposes the neck to a higher risk of injury.

Safety recommendations

For this reason, big hair claws and other large accessories should be avoided while driving or even riding in a car. Soft hair ties or small clips not obstructing the headrest become the safer alternative to avoid possible accidents and injury.
